Pest Control Chemical Cost Calculator
Compute chemical/product cost per job and cost per gallon mixed — critical for pricing accuracy in pest control. Builds from concentrate cost per ounce, dilution ratio, gallons used per job, and application count to derive product cost per job, then adds labor to produce total cost, minimum job price at target margin, and gross margin at your current price. Compares chemical cost percentage against the NPMA 8-12% target. Tool, not advice — state pesticide applicator certification under EPA FIFRA 40 CFR Part 171 is required; 29 C.F.R. § 1910.1200 (OSHA HazCom) requires Safety Data Sheet retention.

Product
Select the pest control product category for this job. Each category has a different dilution ratio and typical cost per ounce. General pest: broad-spectrum insecticide (pyrethroids, neonics). Termiticide: soil termiticide (fipronil, imidacloprid, chlorantraniliprole). Rodenticide: bait blocks or paste bait (warfarin, brodifacoum, bromethalin). Bed bug: contact and residual insecticide. Mosquito: larvicide or adulticid concentrate.

Product cost per job
- Cost per gallon mixed

- Minimum job price at target margin
- $114.38
- Gross margin at current price
- 69.5%
- Total cost per job (product + labor)
- $45.75
- Summary
- general pest chemical: $0.75/oz × 1.0 oz/gal = $0.75/gal mixed. 1.0 gal × 1 application(s) = $0.75 product cost/job. Labor: 1.0 hr × $45.00/hr = $45.00. Total cost: $45.75. Minimum job price at 60.0% margin: $114.38. Current job price $150.00: gross margin 69.5%. Chemical cost is 0.5% of current job price — within the NPMA 8-12% target band. Tool, not advice. State pesticide applicator certification under EPA FIFRA 40 CFR Part 171 is required. 29 C.F.R. § 1910.1200 (OSHA HazCom) requires Safety Data Sheet retention for all handled pesticides. Worker classification under 26 U.S.C. § 3121 requires CPA review.
How this calculator works
This calculator computes the true chemical/product cost per pest control job from concentrate cost per ounce, dilution ratio, and gallons used per job. It combines product cost with labor cost to produce total job cost, minimum job price at target margin, and gross margin at your current price. The chemical cost percentage output is compared against the NPMA 8-12% target to flag over-application or under-pricing.
Why chemical cost accuracy matters
Most pest control operators use a flat chemical cost allocation per job ($5, $8, $12) without deriving it from actual product cost, dilution ratio, and application volume. This produces systematic pricing errors — either consistently under-costing specialty treatments (bed bug, termite) where product cost is high, or consistently over-costing routine general pest recurring visits where product cost is genuinely low.
The correct approach: compute cost per gallon mixed (concentrate $/oz × dilution oz/gal), multiply by gallons used, and multiply by the number of application passes. This is the actual cost of chemicals for the specific job, not an industry-average allocation.
Label compliance and dilution
The dilution ratio must follow the EPA-registered pesticide label exactly. Applying a concentrate at a dilution rate higher than the label allows is a federal violation of FIFRA (Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act) and can result in civil penalties, loss of applicator certification, and personal liability for property damage. The calculator allows any dilution ratio input — the operator is responsible for using only label-compliant dilution rates.
OSHA HazCom requirements
29 C.F.R. § 1910.1200 (OSHA Hazard Communication Standard) requires pest control operators to maintain Safety Data Sheets for every pesticide handled by W-2 employees. The SDS requirement applies to stored product (the concentrate jug in the truck) and to products mixed in the sprayer. SDS documents are available from every major pesticide manufacturer and distributor at no charge. Digital SDS libraries (stored on a phone or tablet in the service vehicle) satisfy the accessibility requirement.

Cost per gallon mixed = concentrate cost per fluid ounce × dilution ratio (ounces of concentrate per gallon). If a bifenthrin concentrate costs $0.75/oz and the label calls for 0.75 oz per gallon, the cost per gallon mixed is $0.56. This is the foundational metric — all per-job chemical cost flows from this number: multiply by gallons used per job and number of applications. Operators who buy product from retail stores (Home Depot, Amazon) rather than distributor accounts (Univar, Veseris, Control Solutions) pay materially more per ounce and should establish distributor accounts as a cost-reduction priority.
